Launch/Fundraiser!

by jhawkes on March 27, 2012

My new book, The Most Important Catch, is launching April 3rd and my publisher and I have decided to donate 50% of the proceeds from the first day’s Amazon sales to the fund for Porter Hancock. (It works. The hero in the book is an NFL football player—although Kelly, the heroine, doesn’t realize that for awhile.)
You might remember hearing about Porter. He’s that great 17 year-old kid who became paralyzed from the neck down playing football last October. He’s in my ward and my son played football with him. In fact, there were 8 other boys in our ward on that football team and our bishop is one of the coaches. I can’t really describe the feeling of that next Sunday morning as we were all there with our sons, but Porter and his family were in the ICU at the University Hospital. Our whole ward cried together. There’s still this weird guilt.
At the time, we all knew his mother’s home couldn’t be retrofitted to accommodate a wheelchair. The people of our small community, many of them extended family, came together to literally build them a wheelchair accessible house on ground donated by his grandfather. It was unbelievable! With many people putting in nearly superhuman hours, by the time Porter was able to leave the hospital in December, the house was complete!
It has been a wonderful story, except that Porter still has some huge hurdles to overcome. So I’m hoping to be able to continue to help by raising some more money to defray expenses. In the process, I’ll get some great advertising, which is nice, but that’s not the point. The point is that Porter’s care is and will continue to be overwhelmingly expensive.
50% of the proceeds from this book’s sales on April 3rd at Amazon.com, either hard copy or e-books, will be donated to the account set up at Zion’s Bank for Porter. So please spread the word!
Thank you, Jaclyn

I went to a little mini writer’s conference last Saturday. (I also took my life in my hands getting home in that blizzard that caused 152 slide offs in Summit County in the process, but that’s a whole nuther blog post. Heaven help all those poor Californian starlets in rental cars here for the Sundance [...]

Sundance

December 29, 2011

We had to put our sweet old Golden Retriever, Sundance, to sleep Monday. It was a hard day. It made our hearts tired. We’d had her for 12 years and she’d all but raised our kids. And she did raise several litters of her own puppies and our two younger dogs. In trying to comfort [...]

Who’s Geithner?

December 28, 2011

The other day, when I was visiting with one of my sisters, who, by the way, is a relatively intelligent, competent human, I mentioned how weird I thought it was that one of our other sisters, who is also relatively intelligent, was still an Obama fan. To my surprise, the first sister said that she [...]

I survived Family Home Evening, again.

November 29, 2011

Do you remember when I blogged about surviving family home evening with the Czchekoslavakian Ahnold Schwartenegger? (It was on the other website, but you can see a copy here: http://jaclynmhawkes.blogspot.com/2011/09/i-survived-family-home-evening.html) Well, we’ve recently had one that rivaled it. It will certainly never be forgotten! (That is the key, isn’t it? Make memories, leave a lasting [...]

Thanks for my own little troubles

October 11, 2011

It’s been an introspective several days.  Things in happy valley haven’t been all happy.  One of our dear neighbors died, and although heartbreaking, it was a good thing.  She’d been battling cancer for years and she’s finally at peace.  My heart goes out to her family. On the other end of life’s spectrum, at my [...]

Social media makes me a little nuts

October 4, 2011

I love to write books. I do. Not sure why, but it could have something to do with being able to edit my words several. several, several times. That way I don’t need to feel such urgency to have my mouth covered with a good sturdy layer of duct tape to keep my foot out [...]
